What is Up with Big Data?
Over the years, a lot has of new trends have sprung up changing the world as it is now. To name a few, a lot of companies have started with enabling various devices with the internet. Your light bulb has wifi! Your curtain has wifi! Even your T.V. has wifi! Internet of things gives us more power with our surroundings in terms of accessibility and connection of devices.
Aside from those mentioned above, the idea that we want to focus on is big data. Itis this idea that is currently affecting almost everything we know. Politics. Media. Predic- tions. Business. These are just some of the entities concerned with big data today. But how so? What is with big data?
BIG Data
Big data is a field in computer science that deals with the storage, processing, and analysis of large data sets. It has three concerns that it tries to resolve:
• Big data platforms should be able to handle massive amounts of data and continue ingesting new data. These platforms should take into account the difference in format and nature of data. • It should be adaptable enough for whatever it may take in. • Lastly, big data platforms, with the foresight of storing large sets of data, should do so while lowering cost of time.
Big data has various uses. On its basic use, big data platforms are used for archiving important information and a back-up of it. Hence, big data platforms are fault-tolerant or are able to create multiple copies of information because of possible errors in data sets.
Recently, big data has been used even in politics and advertisements. There has been news spreading that Donald Trump, the current president of the United States of America, used big data as a form of political strategy. Donald, together with a big data company he hired, used Facebook's information to target and release advertisements to key people that could win him the race. With this application that big data offers, it opens us up to possibilities of data warfare, even in politics.
Big data companies were able to use their platforms for business. They use it for predictions using data from possible customers based on their tweets, Facebook posts, Instagram images, cultural background, surveys, locations or several other factors. This information answers their questions similar to 'To what extent should we promote our product?' or 'Should we consider pulling our efforts in targeting these people?'. The precise time slots to use in airing their ads or getting the right elements to put into advertisements because of collective preference changes the game of large businesses.
This emergence of big data could surely affect us even more in a very near future. Knowledge and awareness of this field should be made aware to the masses as they are part of the data companies use. The data that they ingest are the data taken from sources created by people. With some of the massive effects of big data (e.g. elections and business), proper data handling and filtering are important. That is what is up with big data right now.
